You do not need to connect Gmail to Gemini: it is already inside Gmail. What most people are actually looking for is the reverse direction, the paid split, or the reason it is missing. All three, honestly.

You do not need to connect Gmail to Gemini. Google already did it. Gemini is built into Gmail itself, and since the January 2026 update the basics are free for every user: summaries at the top of long threads, Help Me Write in the compose window, one-click suggested replies.
So why is everyone searching for how to connect them? Because one of three things is true. You want the reverse direction, where the Gemini app reads your Gmail as a research source; that one is a real setting, and you do have to switch it on. You want the good features, natural-language inbox search and Proofread, and cannot find them because they sit behind a paid Google AI plan. Or Gemini is missing from your Gmail entirely, and you want to know why.

How to enable Gemini in Gmail (usually a check, not a setup)
Since January 8, 2026, Google has been rolling Gemini's Gmail features out to everyone, not just paying subscribers. Free accounts get AI Overviews (the thread summary), Help Me Write, and suggested replies. Paid Google AI plans add the bigger items: asking your inbox questions in plain language and a Proofread pass on your drafts. A new AI Inbox view, which sorts priorities and to-dos for you, is rolling out to paid tiers, US first.
So the setup is mostly a check, not a task:
- Open a long thread in Gmail and look for the summary card at the top. If it is there, you already have Gemini in Gmail.
- Start a reply and look for Help Me Write in the compose window.
- On a paid plan, open the Gemini side panel and ask something your inbox knows.
If none of that appears: on a personal account it is usually the staged rollout (US and English first). On a work account it is usually your administrator, because Gemini features in Google Workspace are switched on centrally. Asking your admin is faster than waiting.

How to connect Gmail to the Gemini app (Deep Research sources)
This is the setup most guides miss, and it is available to all Gemini users, free included, since late 2025.
- Open the Gemini app or gemini.google.com and sign in.
- Open the tools menu and choose Deep Research.
- A sources option appears: enable Gmail. Drive and Google Chat can be switched on alongside it.
- Type your prompt. Gemini shows you its research plan first; approve it and it works through your mail and the web together.
The result is different in kind from the sidebar: this is Gemini using your correspondence as source material for real research, not summarizing one thread.

Gemini's Gmail story is personal by design. It acts inside one signed-in account, invisibly to everyone else. For your own mailbox that is exactly right.
